Why is God keeping you?

JK Hamilton

The fact that God is a protector is usually one that is received with absolute joy and confidence.  It is an encouraging thing that the God of heaven and earth protects and preserves his children in the very center of a world that is swiftly and almost intentionally headed toward its own destruction.   The bible gives a plethora of examples of God’s protective and preserving nature.   The bible illustrates that God keeps his own.  However, I want to challenge your thinking by suggesting to you that EVERYONE is under his protection.   Those that are his children and those that are not.   He preserves them all.  Just as there are scriptures to show that he protects and preserves his children; there are others that illustrate that he protects and preserves those who have absolutely no regard for him.   Consider the following contrasting scriptural examples: 1 Peter 1:3-5 (NASB) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Clearly this scripture indicates that God guards his children and preserves them for salvation.   This preservation is not FROM the challenges, trial and troubles of life… but IN SPITE OF these things.  Like a blocker on a football field protects a running back as he makes it to the goal line God protects his children as we stumble, fumble, falter, fall, get tackled, talked about, bruised, beat, tossed and tussled toward the finished line.   We are preserved for and to salvation through faith in him.  Praise God!

Now consider the contrasting scripture:  2 Peter 2:9 “then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment,”

Now in this text the word “Keep” mean to guard, preserve, hold in custody.    It appears that just as the faithful are kept, guarded and held in God’s custody so also are the unrighteous. I’m a movie buff.  I recall the old Italian mafia movies when a “Don” would pursue one of his targets.   Though I can’t recall the particular movie, I remember one scene when the Mafia Boss is pursuing his target but some else gets to him first.   The Mob boss finds the target who is about to expire, puts him in the hospital, nurses him back to health, places gangsters to guard the hospital room all for the purpose of torturing him once he’s better.   Though the target was being guarded and preserved… it was all for the purpose of being punished by the hand of the mob boss.

Prisoners and Presidents One of the interesting commonalities between prisoners and presidents is that they both are in protective custody.    Prisoners, no matter how heinous they’re offense, and no matter how heavy their sentence are placed in a prison system that is designed to protect them…even if their ultimate end is the death penalty.   They are guarded, fed, given medical attention, clothed only to be (in some cases) given a lethal injection to the end of their expiration. Presidents are also guarded, protected, provided for.  Even more so than prisoners.  Long after their term of presidency they are given this protection until their very last day of existence.   The difference between prisoners and presidents is the purpose of their preservation.   One is for the purpose of fulfilling destiny while the other is for the purpose of punishment.  But both are KEPT.

Old Testament Example: The three Hebrew Boys (Daniel 3)  versus Pharaoh (Exodus 12-14) Both kept for different purposes.

I can go on and on with various examples of this principle, but it all begs the question…. Why is God keeping you?  Since you’re the only one who knows the direction in which you are going, then only YOU can answer this question.    Direction makes the difference. Being in the Hands of God can be a reason to rejoice or a reason to morn all depending on why he is keeping you in his hand. Be blessed and Be KEPT…..for Salvation.
